Are Turkish people considered Middle Eastern or European?

I recently went to a Turkish heritage festival where they played a movie that talked about this. They consider themselves a part of both areas. The movie actually stated that the capital was chosen because of it's position literally between the two areas. It also did not hurt that any trade going between the two almost had to travel through the area.
