Hanging something heavy on a interior wall....?

As long as you have solid backing behind the mounting plates you will be fine. I wouldn't cut out drywall (looks less finished), you don't need to with 14 square inches of metal plate. Drywall has a pretty good compression strength as long as you have enough surface area.
