Promise isn't worth anything unless you can prove they offered you something for a specific term or action. Also, a short contract is likely a timed contract and therefore can be renewed at the school's discretion, but certainly doesn't have to be. You should negotiate with the school on what you want and what is fair. You may consider joining a teacher's union if you are eligible. Otherwise, you may be at the mercy of the school and therefore may need to seek employment elsewhere. Good luck.
